Elena Reygadas named World’s Best Female Chef in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 awards

She is one of the most important figures in Mexican gastronomy. Elena Reygadas, already named Latin America’s Best Female Chef in 2014 and owner of Rosetta in Mexico City, has just been crowned World’s Best Female Chef 2023 by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. This is the first of this year’s pre-announced awards, ahead of the official World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 ceremony in Valencia, which will take place at the Opera Les Arts in the City of Arts and Sciences complex on the evening of Tuesday the 20th of June.

“It’s an honour to bestow The World’s Best Female Chef award this year on Elena Reygadas, a chef who is paving the way for future generations of female leaders in Mexico and beyond,” said William Drew, Director of Content for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. “With her advocacy of traditional dishes and indigenous biodiversity, Reygadas is promoting the future of Mexican gastronomy and we’re proud to support her mission with this prestigious award.” Elena Reygadas is “very grateful and honoured to have been awarded by people [she] admires so much,” and went on to say that “cooking is a communal practice. And so, for me, this award belongs to my entire team, as well as to all the women in the kitchen who have preserved our culinary legacy for generations.”

Women indeed. The organisation released a statement highlighting Reygadas’ involvement in promoting greater gender parity in kitchens as a strong advocate for Mexican biodiversity and sustainable culture. She has recently launched the ‘Beca Elena Reygadas’ scholarship program for women which aims to promote equal opportunities and strengthen Mexican women’s leadershipin the world of gastronomy. The scholarship is open to Mexican students who have been accepted into culinary school.

After studying English literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the chef, who learned to cook at a very young age with her large family, worked in restaurants and continued cooking at home until she became a chef at the end of her university career. She went to New York and then London, where she spent four years under the leadership of Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli. She returned to Mexico City in 2010 to open a mansion house in the city’s Roma district. She named her restaurant Rosetta and serves traditional Mexican dishes revamped. It is now renowned for being one of the best establishments in the city. Some of her culinary delights include hand-made pasta, such as hoja santa tortelinni, the speciality that helped her make a name for herself, and inspired dishes that highlight and celebrate local ingredients such as pistachio pipián and taco romeritos, and corn tamal served with warm smoked cream.

In addition to the restaurant, which ranked 60th on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list and 37th on The Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2022, Reygadas runs a bakery adjacent to the restaurant, a casual Mexican restaurant called Lardo and the Café Nin bistro, also located in Mexico’s capital city.
