These Are the 7 Biggest Lighting Trends for 2024 (2024)

Whether you’re planning a new build or renovation, lighting makes a room. “Lighting can change the feel and function of a space from bright and spacious to moody and dim,” says Vicky Serany, founder and principal, Southern Studio Interior Design. “Most clients don’t realize how lighting a space is one of the most important elements of the design process.”

Upgrading your lighting can energize an entire room, too, even if you’re not doing a full-scale renovation. “Changing out an old fixture is an easy way to transform a space,” says Paula Daher, principal, Daher Interior Design. “It’s one of the quickest ways to update, no matter what your budget.”

If it’s been a while since you’ve done a room refresh (goodbye, '90s shiny brass chandelier!), it may be time to swap out old fixtures for unique new lights with energy-efficient LEDs. Or maybe it’s time to improve functionality because you’ve noticed you need more light to read or prepare dinner lately (No, you’re not imagining things: Our eyes do need more light to see as we get older!).

No matter what the reason for upgrading, these designer-approved lighting trends for 2024 can make your space feel fresh and new:

Layered Lighting

This technique is at the top of the list. “Layered lighting is a design approach that combines multiple light sources—recessed lighting, pendants, sconces, lamps, undercabinet lighting, toe kicks, and more—to create a balanced and versatile illumination scheme in a room,” says Kerrie Kelly, CEO and creative director of Kerrie Kelly Studio. “Mix all of these various fixtures that complement your decor to achieve a harmonious and functional lighting plan that enhances the beauty and functionality of your space.”

But if you’re not starting from scratch, you can incorporate this idea into your home’s existing lighting. “Don’t be afraid to play with layers of light in your home,” says Serany. “Start by turning off the overhead lights, and use lamps, sconces and even candles.”

Even something as simple as new bedside lamps are an easy way to add new life to a room. And while dimmer switches are nothing new, they add versatility and flexibility to new or existing lighting.

Subtle Styling

Oversized statement pendants over kitchen islands and styles such as Sputnik lights and orbs have had their heyday and are on the way out. “Many of them have this sort of porcupine feel, they’re hard to work with, and they throw odd shadows,” says Daher.

Instead, homeowners are opting for more delicate or mobile-style lights over islands or shallow flush-mount fixtures, which are less utilitarian-looking than recessed can lights and feel like a form of art.

Interesting Textures

Gone are the days of boring yellow-y lamp shades that aren’t quite white or beige. “We’re seeing a resurgence into decorative lampshades on table and floor lamps, as well as sconces,” says Daher.

Woven basket-style lampshades are hot, and they feel both rustic and English cottage-y. Plaster and white gesso chandeliers and sconces also are popular. Glossy black shades are hot, too, and change the look of a lamp in an instant. Our editors also spotted fun textures such as eggshell, as well as light fixtures made with gemstones like selenite, at recent design markets.

Bold Colors and Finishes

Just as with paint colors, homeowners aren’t shying away from bold hues. “We’re seeing fixtures that are painted a color like red or blue for a fun and elegant accent,” says Sarah Stacey, principle designer with Sarah Stacey Interior Design. “I’ve also noticed a lot of Sicilian and Venetian design elements, such as colored Murano glass.”

It's not just about function; lighting also can highlight key design aspects, such as a fabulous backsplash. “Lighting helps the eye travel throughout a room,” says Jen Samson, principle designer and owner, Jen Samson Design. “It can draw attention to specific architecture, art and furniture, and it can highlight depth and height.”

It can even downplay unsightly design flaws you’ve never liked in a room, such as that awkward, unused corner.

Mixing Old and New Pieces

A mixture of materials and styles makes a space feel homey and welcoming. For example, consider sourcing antique lighting for a modern space.

“If everything looks like it’s from the same genre, it feels like a showroom,” says Daher. “If we add something with a bit of provenance or history, such as an antique Murano glass fixture, with modern, linear lighting, suddenly the space feels more special.”

Like fashion, lighting trends change, but, in short, you should always choose what you love. “Design trends come and go, so it’s important to remember that personal style should always be the guiding force in your home,” says Kelly. “Contemporary lighting trends offer endless possibilities to create unique spaces that reflect your individual style. But choose what resonates with your personal design aesthetic.”
