GBBO contestants are always forced to wear the same outfit (2024)

A Great British Bake Off alumni has opened up about the real reason bakers are always seen in the same clothes. One contestant says it got right up each other's noses too.

Lizzie Acker, who starred in season 12 of the BBC baking series, opened up about the behind-the-scenes element of the series and revealed the contestants never got to wash their clothes. And the sweaty feet stench got right up Chigs' nostrils too, she revealed.

Speaking about what happens with their clothes between day one and day two of filming, Lizzie revealed: "Absolutely nothing. You get a new apron. Your apron gets clean, but nothing else does. Everyone smells. You love each other so you’re giving everyone a hug, and it doesn’t matter.

"Crocs have no air vents, and I got back to the green room at one point, I took my shoes off, and Chigs told me, 'Your feet smell vinegary. Put them back on'."

Touching on how close the contestants were with one another, she told Eater: "Our little green room was our little space of rest. Maggie would give everyone shoulder massages and tell everybody, 'We’re going to be okay'. George would make everyone tea. It was great."

Before she was booted from the competition, Lizzie decided to go out with a bang using her final showstopper to celebrate her special educational needs. When she was booted from the show, Lizzie admitted she felt "proud" of herself, admitting: "I feel really proud of myself.

"I’m really happy I’m a quarter-finalist. I was so pleased to get to where I did, and the bakers that made it to the semi-final truly deserve to be there. These are happy tears. I have had such lovely messages on social media about SEN, and they have all been so positive with people relating to me.

"If it makes them feel good about it and they can identify with someone on television talking about it normally, then I think that is a good thing.”
